Thomas Edison National Historical Park GLENMONT MANSION TOUR

The home movies, which range in length from 1-3 minutes and were photographed on 16 mm Kodak safety film, were stored in the museum collection of Thomas Edison NHP for decades before park staff worked with the Library of Congress to have them digitally restored.

A total of 94 exterior windows grace the building, 41 of them adorned with canvas awnings. Over the years, the Edison’s added 6 more bathrooms, mostly on the second floor, for a total room count of 29 and ½ . While the Township's topography is mostly flat, there are some hillier areas. The highest point is on Grandview Avenue, which reaches a maximum elevation of about 220 feet. The lowest elevation in the township is on sea level on the Raritan River.

Originally, Glenmont had 23 and 1/2 rooms, including 2 and 1/2 baths. The Edison’s added 6 more bathrooms to the home and made many other additions and modifications while living there. Looking for a place near his contemplated new West Orange laboratories, Edison buys Glenmont in a distress sale, completely furnished, with barn and livestock, greenhouse, and all the grounds for $125,000. Mina had her choice of this estate or a townhouse in New York and wisely selected Glenmont.

And despite Edison’s attempts to describe the homes as elegant and sophisticated, many people still considered them an affordable step-up for slum dwellers rather than a desirable lifestyle choice. In 1908, the famous American inventor filed a patent for the construction of buildings using a single placement of concrete. Ultimately a massive failure, the idea was nonetheless way ahead of its time, and some of his concrete houses still stand today. Today there are 160 lots, most hosting mansions, so Edison’s house is not the only estate you will see. However, stick to the roads and keep off of private property. Edison has numerous sections and neighborhoods. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 30.69 square miles (79.49 km2), including 30.06 square miles (77.86 km2) of land and 0.63 square miles (1.63 km2) of water (2.05%). Outbuildings on the property include a garage, barn, gardener’s cottage, and greenhouse. The cottage now serves as a visitor center where you can get information and shop at the book and gift store. Though Thomas Edison died in 1931, Mina lived until 1947.
